Learn about fabrics

Fabric Fineness: The fineness of a shirt fabric depends on two factors: thread count and whether the yarn is single or two-ply. Both elements are indicated on our swatches with a series of numbers such as 100/2 or 70/1.

Our higher end shirts feature 2-ply fabric and higher thread count.

  • The ‘100’ in a 100/2 is the fabric thread count. It refers to the total number of threads used in both warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) of a one-inch square of fabric (6cm2). For example, 50 warp threads woven with 50 weft threads produce a fabric of 100-thread count. As a rule of thumb, the higher the thread count, the more soft, luxurious (and expensive) you can expect the fabric to be. However, thread count isn’t everything – the compactness and density of the woven fabric play a big part in determining the overall fabric quality. Higher count fabrics have a tendency to wrinkle more easily as they are relatively finer. So, the weave plays an important role in which fabric you should select.

  • The ‘2’ in a 100/2 refers to the ply of the fabric. Typically, dress fabrics can either be single ply or two-ply. Ply refers to the number of yarns that are twisted together to make a single thread. Two-ply fabrics are luxurious to wear with a smooth, crisp feel and are generally superior to single-ply fabrics. Of course, that’s not to say single-ply fabrics are not luxurious – higher count single ply fabrics with compact construction are equally sought after.

  • The weight of a fabric depends on the thickness of its threads, the density of the weave or knit, as well as its composition (linen for instance is 20% heavier than silk). The dyeing or printing process can also affect the weight. Generally speaking, the lighter a fabric, the more drape it will have. The heavier, the more opaque and resistant it will be. The fabric weight of shirts can be divided into 6 categories:

    - Very light <135 G/M2

    - Light 135 - 200 G/M2

    - Medium 200 - 270 G/M2

    - Medium-heavy 270 - 340 G/M2

    - Heavy 340 – 400 G/M2

    - Very heavy >400 G/M2

Most of our fabrics have a light to medium weight, as they are best worn in combination with a suit.

 How It’s Made

How do we make your favorite shirts?

Crafstmanship.

One of the indicators of a quality and durable shirt is the amount of handwork involved. Although modern machines are capable of imitating many hand stitches, there are still plenty that they cannot. A handmade stitch is more flexible and can be adjusted with every single stitch – there’s no machine setting like it. In our range of makes, different finishes are made by hand (the details for each individual make are included in the ‘Makes’ chapter). Below you will find a full list and explanation of all the handmade details you can find in our shirts. Underneath an overview of the placement of all handmade details can be found.

Traditional or Handmade?

When it comes to shirts and the different makes we offer, it’s not quite as complex as our jackets. A shirt doesn’t have quite as many layers, with the exception of interlining of your collar and cuff. This is something that can be selected as a design option to keep them looking crisp and structured. The two types of makes we offer are detailed below.

Machine Sewn

A traditional, machine-made seam. Featured in our essentials and luxury collections.

  • Our Traditional shirt is, quite logically, made using traditional tailoring techniques and finishes – the kind that you find on higher-end shirts in the market. These include a ‘gusset’ at the side seam, narrow 8mm seams and a top-button placed asymmetrically for a cleaner fit around the neck. The shirt is assembled using various sewing machines using 19 stitches per 3 cm, to ensure a high quality and consistent finish. Handwork - Button attachment

    Pros

    • An affordable yet high quality option

    • Refined look

Hand Sewn

A handmade seam. Featured in our noble and ultra collections. (Also available in essentials and luxury)

  • As the name suggests, this shirt is fully handmade; constructed the way original skilled tailors made them before the invention of the sewing machine. Almost all of the seams in our shirt are finished by hand, which makes it a highly time consuming and costly process. However, it is well worth it. A handmade stitch is more flexible and can be adjusted with every single stitch – there’s no machine setting like it – making these shirts feel extremely comfortable, with a natural amount of ‘stretch’ for motion and ease in wear. Besides the side-seam gusset, 8mm seams and asymmetrical top-button, our handmade make includes: displaced sleeve seams, for extra comfort, and a travetta on the sleeve vent.
