Men’s Pinstripe Suits

An 1890’s boating stripe that became fashionable in the 1920s has evolved into the quintessential business power suit.

A power business suit with 1920s heritage.

Pinstripe suits got their start for casual odd jackets (aka, the boating stripe) but eventually migrated toward business dress. Not all pinstripes are created equal, however, and they come in a wide variety: the pindot stripe, the rope stripe, the chalk stripe, the narrow stripe, the tonal stripe and the double stripe (often two colors closely offset).

Typically, you should only wear a pinstripe suit for business, not for formal occasions. The pinstripe suit works quite well as a peak lapel and also as a double breasted suit. For a year-round weight cloth, we recommend navy pinstripe fabric. For those looking for a fall-winter suit, consider a chalk stripe flannel suit in shades of grey for a softer and heathered look.

A thicker more pronounced ‘chalk’ stripe is more ‘power suiting' than a pinhead sized pinstripe.
